To celebrate the International Day of the Greek language (9th February 2026), Odesa Lyceum №43 will host a special educational and cultural presentation entitled: “A journey from Greece to Ukraine through the world of words and language – Discovering the Greek roots of English words”.

The event is aimed at the students learning English, and its purpose is to highlight the key role of the Greek language in shaping the global vocabulary, especially that of the English language. Through examples of words, interactive tasks and visual materials, the students will have the opportunity to discover how Greek roots such as demo-, bio-, geo-, tele-, micro-, macro- and many others remain living elements of everyday worldwide communication.

The presentation is not only a language lesson, but also a symbolic cultural journey that unites Greece and Ukraine, two countries with deep historical and cultural relations. In this particularly difficult period for Ukraine, this event emphasises the power of language as a vehicle for unity, memory and hope.

The event is supported by Odesa National University named after I.I. Mechnikov, the Faculty of Romance-Germanic Philology, the Greek Language Centre and the Odessa branch of the Greek Cultural Foundation, confirming the importance of cooperation between educational and cultural institutions in promoting the Greek language and intercultural dialogue.

The artistic curator of the presentation is a Greek language teacher Nanuchka Podkovyroff, who together with Bomko Vladyslav, an English teacher at the lyceum, uses a modern and creative approach to highlight the centuries-old history and global influence of the Greek language.

This event is a kind of hymn to the power of language as a bridge between cultures, proving that the Greek language remains alive and present in every corner of the world.
