The Library of the Branch of the Hellenic Foundation for Culture
The Branch of the Hellenic Foundation for Culture has a unique in Ukraine library of Greek books containing over 7500 Greek titles. The library lends books and provides other services to university and college faculties and students, translators and other persons interested in Greek language and culture. There are also some books in Ukrainian, Russian and other foreign languages in the library.
The library collection contains printed and audio-visual materials including databases, bibliographies, catalogues, reference books and dictionaries in the fields of philosophy, religion, social sciences, education, linguistics, fines arts, literature, history, archaeology and geography. There is also the section of literature for children and youths.
The large collection of books and audio-visual materials for children contains CDs of popular, traditional and modern Greek music, audiotapes and videotapes with entertaining and educational contents.
The library collection is being constantly replenished with new items to meet preferences of our readers composed primarily of university and college students. There are quite a few older readers as well as schoolchildren who learn Greek language in their schools.
The library of the Branch collaborates with libraries from Odesa and other cities of Ukraine, organizes thematic exhibitions and participates in book exhibits in other cities where it presents publications by the Foundation.
Information Center
The library also functions as the information center, which provides access to printed and on-line resources about Greece. The library collection is managed through ABEKT automation system for library administration from the Greek National Documentation Center, which includes registering, cataloguing, classifying and compiling a thematic handbook of the available materials. Cataloguing is done via ΑΑCR2 (AngloAmericanCataloguingRules) and classification is conducted with the support of DeweyDecimalClassification adapted to the needs of the library collection. The on-line catalogue is accessible to every person interested in exploring the library. The library lends books to subscribers and all readers are provided with a possibility of making photocopies. There is a reading-room open to everyone. The information requested from the library is provided verbally, by phone, by fax and via e-mail. Since 2005 there has been functioning a computer-room with a free access to the Internet.
