The Branch of the Hellenic Foundation for Culture will host a lecture by the department head of the Odessa Western and Eastern art museum, Timokhova Iryna, on the theme: “El Greco (1541-1614). From Crete to Toledo” on February 27 at 16:00.

The lecture is devoted to the works of El Greco, a unique master, whose fate is as mysterious and enigmatic as his unique painting, which brought him eternal glory.

Domenicos Theotocopoulos or El Greco was born in Crete. At age 26 he travelled toVenice. In 1577, he moved to Toledo, Spain, where he lived and worked until his death. In Toledo, El Greco received several major commissions and produced his best-known paintings.

El Greco’s dramatic and expressionistic style was met with puzzlement by his contemporaries but found appreciation in the 20th century. El Greco is regarded as a precursor of both Expressionism and Cubism, while his personality and works were a source of inspiration for poets and writers. He is best known for tortuously elongated figures and often fantastic or phantasmagorical pigmentation, marrying  Byzantinetraditions with those of Western painting.

The year 2014 has been announced as the Year of El Greco, on the occasion of the 400 year anniversary since the death of the great painter, by decision of the Ministry of Culture of Greece and the Ministry of Culture of Spain.
