May 18, 2021 (Tuesday) at 16:00 the BHFC will present an online lecture “Odessan Greeks and the authorities of Odessa at the “times of Langeron” by Viktor Savchenko, Professor of the K.D. Ushinsky South Ukrainian National Pedagogical University, the editor of the historical journals “Antiquities of Lukomorye” and “Southwest. Odessa”, and the head of the Odessa section of the Odessa House of Scientists.
The lecture will focus on the turbulent events in southern Ukraine and Odessa in the early 1820s, when the Greek people rose up against their oppressors. This era formed new meanings and values. During this period, Odessa became a “Greek center” where the uprising was being prepared. The organizers of the Greek resistance were closely associated with the world Masonic movement. The Greek revolution helped change world cultural paradigms by launching the era of “romanticism” and actualizing of ideology of “nationalism” and the ideas of “democracy”. The lecturer will also discuss the fate of Odessan Greeks in the 1810-1820s, the patriots who supported the revolutionary movement in their historical homeland.
The lecture will be held on the Zoom platform
