Lecture: “Public and private in Odessa practices: anthropology of space”

лекция 30.01 (2)

January 30, 2020 (Thursday) at 16:00 the branch of the Hellenic Foundation for Culture will host a lecture “Public and private in Odessa practices: anthropology of space” by Prof. Oleksandr Prigarin from I.I.  Mechnikov National University of Odessa

“The lecture will duscuss the specifics of perception of public and private space in the historical dynamics of Odessa.  The syncretism and indivisibility of these spheres of space are the key elements in understanding the uniqueness of everyday practices of the citizens of Odessa.  We can observe this through considering the categories of “courtyard”, “street”, “beach”, and “bazaar”.  These places of everyday life, with all their temporal and synchronous variability, are extremely stable in the social interaction of Odessans.  They not only shape the specifics of Odessa, but also assume their own construction according to this distinctive culture.  It is the manifestation of these qualities and their appearance and functioning that the lecture will focus on.”
