On March 2, 2021, at 16:00, the Branch of the Hellenic Foundation for Culture will present an online lecture “Ottoman Greek refugees in Odessa during the Greek Revolution for Independence (1821-1829)” by Olena Uvarova, Associate Professor of the Department of Social Sciences of Odessa National Medical University.
The lecture will focus on public and charitable activities that helped Greek refugees from the Ottoman Empire who had escaped to Odessa from persecutions that followed the Greek Revolution for Independence (1821-1829) and on the fate and daily life of the forced emigrants.
The lecturer makes use of archival documents, among which there is an extremely emotional request of refugees to the Odessa Greek Auxiliary Commission, established in 1821 for assisting in their arrangement. The events described in the documents helped to shed light on the difficulties of life of the refugees and losses in their families starting from the circumstances of their lives in the homeland.
Focusing on specific individuals, the lecture will personalize the events of European policy related to the Eastern Question, as well as migration processes in southern Ukraine, local history, the history of charity and the history of ethnic groups in Ukraine.
