On the occasion of the 2510th anniversary of Pericles (c. 493 BC), March 2, 2017 at 16:00 the Branhc of the HFC will host a lecture “Pericles and the Classical Athens” by Prof. Sergei Shevtsov from the Department of Philosophy at the Odessa I.I. Mechnikov National University.
The second half of the 5th century BC is traditionally viewed as a period of classical Hellenic culture related primarily with Athens. It was during this period that there were written works of famous Greek poets, philosophers and historians (Aeschylus, Sophocles, Euripides, Aristophanes, Anaxagoras, Democritus, Socrates), created architectural masterpieces of Myron, Phidias and Polycleitus and erected the Parthenon, the Erechtheion, the Propylaea of the Athenian Acropolis and the Odeon. However, this period is better known as times of Pericles, a renowned public figure, brilliant speaker, general and strategist. It was the period of prospering democracy and the greatest prosperity of Classical Greece. The lecture will provide a comparison of different views on the figure of Pericles.
