We deeply mourn the death of Professor Vassos Karageorghis, a great friend of the Branch of the HFC, whose invaluable help we felt for many years.
Vassos Karageorghis was an outstanding archaeologist, scholar, public figure, one of the founders and permanent member of the Cyprus Academy of Sciences, a visiting professor and partner at 12 universities worldwide, advisor to the President of the Republic of Cyprus, director of the Anastasios G. Leventis Foundation and much more.
He loved Odessa, the children, the youth, visited the city many times and contributed to it a lot.
From one of the published book we read:” With bated breath in the lecture hall of the BHFC they listened to Professor, archaeologist from Cyprus Vassos Karageorghis three times, twice in 1999 and once in 2001, and his lecture “Genesis of Aphrodite in Cyprus” had to be repeated for “encore”.
The plaque in the Odessa Archaeological Museum testifies to the significant contribution of the Anastasios G. Leventis Foundation to the renewal of the museum’s exhibition under the leadership of Prof. Vassos Karageorghis.
For his personal contribution to the renovation of the Archaeological Museum, the mayor of Odessa awarded Vassos Karageorghis with the G.G. Maraslis Medal of Honor of the 3rd degree.
He was a generous and good friend to the Odessans and the Branch of the Hellenic Foundation for Culture.
Blessed memory and gratitude to Vassos Karageorghis will always remain in our hearts.
We send our sincere words of condolence to his family, friends and colleagues…
