Балканские войны

21/03/2013

On the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the Balkan wars the Branch of the Hellenic Foundation for Culture in collaboration with the photographic archive of theBenaki Museum presents an exhibition of materials from the archives of Romaidis and Zeitz.

The selected photographs depict the land operations of the Greek army and the major events of the First and the Second Balkan Wars.

Aristotle Romaidis, the owner of the famous in Athens in the beginning of the 20th century shop, delegated his talented co-worker F. Zeitz to take photos of military operations. Zeitz, following the Greek army in all the major battles, immortalized the scene of the two Balkan wars. His photographs are characterized by their anthropocentrism. Zeitz took known and unknown heroes, everyday life in the military camps, moments of the battles, destroyed villages, dead soldiers and horses, captured soldiers’ anxiety, bitterness of defeated, jubilation of winners.

This exhibition is the minimum tribute to all those who fought and fell victim to freedom and made a decisive contribution to the creation of modern Balkan states, and at the same time it is dedicated to a new genre of military photojournalism, which found fertile ground and got a dynamic development during the Balkan wars. It is also a small tribute to the creativity of Zeitz, photographer, and gratitude to all those who has carefully preserved and provided us with these priceless documented historical events of a century ago.

The exhibition of the 18th tablets includes approximately 130 photos, shows the chronology of events and presents the information data for major military actions.

Opening: 21/03/2013 at 16:00
